Birth Support
A birth doula is a certified professional who provides continuous varieties of support to the mother and her family throughout each phase of pregnancy, labor and delivery, and sometimes into the postpartum period
Before birth prep usually include:
-
Prenatal consultations: Meeting with the client and their partner to discuss expectations, fears, concerns, and develop a personalized and in depth vision.
-
Information and Education: Providing evidence-based information about pregnancy, labor, and delivery, and helping the family understand their options and make informed decisions.
-
Comfort techniques: Teaching and practicing relaxation techniques, breathing exercises, laboring positions, and other non-medical pain relief methods. (such as Rebozo technique or helping with Spinning babies circuits)
During labor and birth we offer:
-
Continuous support: Staying with the client throughout labor and delivery, providing consistent encouragement and reassurance.
-
Physical comfort: Offering hands-on support through massage, counter-pressure, suggesting position changes, and helping encourage hydration and nutrition.
-
Emotional support: Helping the client cope with the intensity of labor, navigate the highs and lows, new emotions, and manage anxiety
-
Advocacy: Helping the client communicate their preferences and concerns to the medical team, ensuring their voice is heard and their birth plan is honored.
-
Partner support: Supporting and involving the birthing person's partner, helping them to process the experience and enabling them to participate actively in the moment
After birth we include:
-
Postpartum visits: Making one to three post-delivery follow-up visits to check on the client's physical and emotional recovery.
-
Breastfeeding support: Offering advice, referrals and assistance with breastfeeding, including latching techniques and addressing common challenges
-
Infant care: Providing information and support on infant care, such as bathing, diapering, swaddling, and soothing techniques.
Important Reminders:
-
Doulas are not the same as midwifes and cannot deliver babies, administer medications, or provide medical advice or diagnosis
-
Their role complements the care provided by doctors and midwifes
-
Studies have shown that continuous doula support can lead to positive outcomes, such as shorter labor, reduced need for medical interventions (including C-sections), and a more positive birth experience for the client.
-
Doulas are beneficial for any type of birth, including unmedicated births, medicated births, and planned or unplanned C-sections.
